Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately end his ongoing trip to France and return to Nigeria to address the country’s deepening security crisis.
In a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi voiced alarm over the rising violence during Tinubu’s absence.
“In just two weeks, more than 150 Nigerians have been killed in Plateau, Zamfara, and other states. The situation is further worsened by pipeline explosions in the Niger Delta and renewed insurgency in the Northeast,” he stated.
Obi criticized the president’s prolonged stay abroad, saying, “The CEO of a distressed company called Nigeria cannot afford to be away from headquarters during a crisis.”
The Presidency had earlier clarified that Tinubu’s visit, which began on April 2, is for official engagements not for medical reasons, as alleged by activist Omoyele Sowore.
Presidential aide Daniel Bwala dismissed those claims during a recent appearance on Politics Today.
Obi ended his statement with a strong call for decisive leadership. “The new Nigeria we seek begins with accountable leadership,” he said.
