In response to growing public criticism, the Presidency has defended the Federal Executive Council’s approval of a N10 billion solar energy project for the Aso Villa.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, addressed the concerns on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account.
He argued that the move to solar power aligns with global best practices, pointing out that the White House in Washington, DC also utilizes solar energy as part of its power supply.
“The White House in Washington DC uses solar power,” Onanuga stated, sharing a video of the U.S. installation to reinforce the environmental and strategic benefits of adopting renewable energy in high-level government facilities.
Sources familiar with the project revealed that the solar system is intended to power the President’s residence, key administrative buildings, and other critical areas within the State House, enhancing energy efficiency and ensuring a more reliable electricity supply.
While some citizens have applauded the initiative’s focus on sustainability, others have raised concerns over its high cost, especially in light of the nation’s ongoing economic challenges.
