The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has reminded the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), that he is required to report to the National Assembly in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution.

Abbas gave the charge on Tuesday while inaugurating the House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on Rivers State.

The committee is tasked with overseeing the implementation of federal directives and policies in the state during the six-month emergency rule declared by President Bola Tinubu.

The Speaker emphasized that the administrator’s role is temporary and circumscribed, and that he is expected to operate with the highest levels of transparency and accountability.

Abbas warned that the committee’s work must be guided by objectivity and non-partisanship.

The committee’s mandate includes monitoring public expenditures, scrutinizing the caretaker administration’s conduct, and ensuring that federal directives and policies are implemented as intended.

The Speaker stressed that the National Assembly’s intervention in Rivers State is a constitutional necessity aimed at safeguarding peace, security, and the rule of law.

The Chairman of the committee, Prof Julius Ihonvbere, pledged the panel’s readiness to deliver on its assignment, assuring that they would work with dedication and commitment to unbiased decision-making.
