President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will depart Abuja for Lagos on Tuesday to participate in the 50th anniversary celebration of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), marking a significant milestone in regional integration efforts.

The Lagos segment of the golden jubilee, which follows the initial commemoration in Accra, Ghana, will gather regional leaders and key stakeholders. As Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Tinubu will deliver a keynote address at a commemorative event at Eko Hotels and Suites, highlighting the bloc’s achievements over the past five decades.

A symbolic re-enactment of the 1975 treaty signing that established ECOWAS will also take place at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in Victoria Island. This will be followed by a panel discussion and a keynote review of ECOWAS’s journey by Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, Chairman of the NIIA and former Minister of External Affairs.

Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), the sole surviving signatory of the original ECOWAS treaty, will participate in the ceremonies and deliver a special address.

Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, will open the event with a welcome address, setting the stage for both celebration and strategic reflection on the future of the regional bloc.

While in Lagos, President Tinubu will also commission several major infrastructure projects under his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda. These include:

The inauguration of Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway

The Lekki Deep Sea Port Tax Credit Concrete Road

The flag-off of Section II of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway

The 7th Axial Road

Additionally, the President will virtually inaugurate completed infrastructure projects in northern Nigeria, including:

Kano-Kanwar-Danja-Hadejiya Section II Road

Yakasai-Zalli Road

He will also flag off new road projects such as the Kano Northern By-pass, Zaria-Hunkuyi-Dabai Section I, Dabai-Kafur-Malumfashi Road, and Malumfashi-Dayi-Yashe-Gidan Mutum Daya Section III.

President Tinubu is expected to observe the Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the State House Mosque in Dodan Barracks before returning to Abuja.
