Former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has firmly denied reports claiming he is in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Describing the rumours as “clear mischief” and a “calculated attempt” to tarnish his image, Kyari took to his official X handle late Saturday to set the record straight. He stated that he is currently enjoying a “well-deserved rest” following the recent dissolution of the NNPCL board and management.
Kyari reiterated his readiness to respond to any lawful inquiries related to his tenure, adding that his service at NNPCL spanning 34 years, which includes nearly six years as CEO was marked by transparency and integrity.
“Over the past few days, and particularly in the last few hours, I’ve received numerous calls from concerned friends and family regarding claims by an online publication that I’m in EFCC custody,” he wrote. “This is a deliberate falsehood aimed at misleading the public.”
President Bola Tinubu had, in April, relieved Kyari and board chairman Pius Akinyelure of their positions. Bashir Ojulari has since been appointed as the new Group CEO, effective April 2, 2025.
Kyari emphasized his strong sense of accountability, both to national institutions and to his faith. “As a Muslim, I believe that if I do not account before man, I will certainly account before Allah. I am prepared to answer for my stewardship,” he said.
He also urged the media to uphold ethical standards and avoid spreading unverified claims, warning that such disinformation could harm the country’s image and deter international investment.
“The spread of false information serves no purpose and could negatively impact national interests, including investor confidence,” Kyari cautioned.
He concluded by thanking those who reached out to him and reassured them of his full cooperation with any legitimate inquiry.
