Nigerian street-hop artist Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has dismissed the significance of the 2024 Headies Awards after being overlooked, claiming he values tangible investments over industry recognition.

In a widely circulated video, Portable alleged that many artists buy their accolades. “I buy cars with my money, not awards,” he said. “You mock me for not winning, but I have the money, the album, the fans. Who’s really winning?”

His comments follow his recent release from police custody after paying a N30,000 fine in connection with an alleged assault case.

Portable also questioned the integrity of award shows, accusing them of favoritism and commercial bias. Pointing to his collaboration with British rapper Skepta, he said global recognition matters more than local trophies.

“Skepta and I are the real winners,” he asserted. “We don’t need your validation.”

He concluded by stressing his focus on long-term investments: “I’d rather buy land and houses than waste money chasing clout.”
