The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared a total lockdown on May 30, 2025, in observance of Biafran Heroes Day a tribute to those who died during the Biafra-Nigeria civil war.

IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful said this year’s memorial will include lectures and tributes both locally and internationally.

The group has notified South-East and South-South governors, as well as the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), urging them to adjust schedules accordingly.

Describing the day as “sacred,” IPOB urged residents to observe a sit-at-home from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. No protests will be held in Nigeria, and the group emphasized the day is meant for reflection, not demonstration.

All public activities including schools, markets, and church services are to be suspended, with only essential services like healthcare, fire, police, media, and emergency response exempt.

Abroad, IPOB directed its members to hold lawful protests and town hall meetings to honour the fallen and advocate for the release of their detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The remembrance includes key Biafran figures such as Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Gen. Phillip Effiong, Chief Frank Opigo, and Commander Ikonso.

“May 30 is a public holiday for all Biafrans,” the group stated. “A solemn day for honour, unity, and remembrance.”
