Tragedy struck in Ibadan on Tuesday morning when a stray bullet fired by a police officer claimed the life of a student heading to sit for his West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exam.

The incident occurred along Gbagi Market Road during a high-speed police chase of a vehicle suspected to be occupied by internet fraudsters, commonly known as “Yahoo Boys.” Amid the pursuit, one of the bullets fired by the officer missed its target and struck the student, who was riding a motorcycle with his twin brother.

The victim was immediately rushed to Welfare Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

In the aftermath of the incident, grieving traders and community members carried the boy’s body to the Oyo State Secretariat in protest, demanding justice and police accountability. The demonstration drew a large crowd, prompting the deployment of security personnel to the government complex to maintain order.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Oyo State Police Command nor the state government has released an official statement on the matter.
