Nigerian chess maestro and founder of Chess in Slums Africa, Tunde Onakoya, has been gifted a brand-new Nord A9 SUV by indigenous car manufacturer, Nord Motion. The gesture followed a friendly chess match between Onakoya and Nord CEO, Oluwatobi Ajayi.
Sharing the news via his official X.com handle on Thursday, Onakoya expressed heartfelt appreciation, calling the SUV the “most beautiful car” he has ever owned.
He added, “Just got home to the most heartwarming surprise from my #nordmotion family the stunning new Nord A9 SUV. Hands down the most beautiful car I’ve ever owned, but even more beautiful is the love behind this incredible gift. Grateful beyond words.”
In a lighthearted comment, he noted, “Of course the only way to get the new car was by not losing this match.”
The surprise gift also came with an extension of his ambassadorial contract with Nord Motion for another year. Praising the CEO, he wrote, “I call #OluwatobiAjayiJ the ‘Elon’ of Africa… a great thinker and innovator across board.”
A statement from Nord Automobiles described the SUV presentation, held on May 5, 2025, as a celebration of Onakoya’s achievements and a reflection of shared values like innovation, discipline, and Nigerian excellence.
Highlighting the friendly chess match between Onakoya and Ajayi, the statement said, “The highly contested game ended in a draw, showcasing the strategic brilliance of both competitors and further cementing their bond.”
It added, “Their friendly rivalry reflects the passion and precision both men bring to their respective fields Onakoya in chess, and Ajayi in automotive leadership. This new SUV symbolizes Tunde’s inspiring journey and enduring partnership with Nord.”
This marks the second Nord vehicle Onakoya has received. In June 2024, he was similarly rewarded with an SUV after winning a match against Ajayi, which also launched his role as a brand ambassador.
Most recently, Onakoya made headlines in April 2025 after setting a new Guinness World Record with US chess player Shawn Martinez, completing a 64-hour chess marathon. The feat surpassed their previous 60-hour record and broke the standing 2018 record of 56 hours.
