Miss Oluwafunmilayo Oluwaseun, the one-day Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), has praised President Bola Tinubu’s student loan scheme, describing it as a transformative policy for underprivileged students across Nigeria.
Oluwaseun, a 23-year-old final-year student of Criminology and Security Studies, commended the initiative during a press conference held on Tuesday to mark the beginning of her 24-hour tenure. She stated that the loan scheme has made higher education more accessible for students in public tertiary institutions who might otherwise be unable to afford it.
“We sincerely thank President Tinubu for this laudable intervention. The student loan initiative has helped millions of Nigerian students access quality education, and we are truly grateful,” she said.
Oluwaseun emerged as the winner of FUOYE’s first-ever One-Day Vice-Chancellor contest, an initiative coordinated by Prof. Adebola Aderibigbe.
As part of her brief tenure, she urged President Tinubu to consider launching a “One-Day President of Nigeria” initiative, modeled after the one-day Governor programme he introduced during his time as Governor of Lagos State. She said such an initiative would help bridge the gap between Nigerian youth and leadership.
“Just as FUOYE gave students a platform to lead, I call on President Tinubu to replicate this at the federal level. A one-day President programme would provide young Nigerians with an opportunity to engage with leadership and voice their aspirations,” she said.
Addressing student-related challenges, Oluwaseun pointed to limited internet connectivity, economic hardship, and mental health issues as major concerns. She noted that efforts are already underway to tackle these issues, including proposals for mobile network mast installations and a mental health advocacy campaign in collaboration with the university’s health centre.
In response to economic pressures, she also announced plans for an on-campus commercial market aimed at providing affordable goods, supporting student entrepreneurship, and creating part-time job opportunities.
Additionally, she introduced “FUOYE 360,” a digital archive developed by semi-finalist Miss Mosopefoluwa Sanyaolu. The platform provides access to past exam questions to aid academic performance and reduce exam-related stress. Oluwaseun called on stakeholders to support and expand the initiative.
