The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Professor Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist from the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, as its new national president.
Prof. Piwuna, who also holds the position of Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, takes over from Professor Victor Osodeke, a soil science specialist from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, in Abia State.
The election was conducted during ASUU’s 23rd National Delegates Congress, which took place on Sunday in Benin City. Piwuna emerged victorious over his opponent, Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.
His tenure begins amid heightened tensions surrounding the Federal Government’s disbursement of Earned Academic Allowances, along with ongoing challenges such as academic brain drain and the looming threat of industrial action.
Further updates are expected.
