The Nigerian Senate has expressed concern over recent comments made by Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru, who dismissed the necessity of a planned two-day national security summit organized by the Senate.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized that such public statements could strain the collaborative efforts between the legislative and executive branches, especially in addressing the nation’s security challenges.
Minister Badaru, during a briefing in Abuja, argued that strategic military operations are more effective than summits in tackling security issues, noting that operational directives are the responsibility of Defence Chiefs.
In response, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele described the minister’s remarks as discouraging, highlighting the importance of inclusive discussions in formulating comprehensive security strategies.
In a related development, the House of Representatives has called for immediate action to address the escalating violence in Plateau State.
Following recent attacks in Bokkos and Bassa local government areas, which resulted in significant loss of life and displacement, the House urged President Bola Tinubu to deploy additional security personnel to the affected regions.
Lawmakers Ishaya Lalu and Daniel Ago, representing the impacted constituencies, emphasized the urgent need for enhanced security measures and humanitarian assistance.
The House also mandated relevant committees to investigate the root causes of the persistent attacks and to develop a comprehensive rehabilitation plan for the affected communities.
