A devastating accident occurred on Friday in the Ikangba area of Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, when a truck lost control and plowed into a group of students from Seico Secondary School.
One female student, who was reportedly participating in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), died instantly. Another female student sustained severe injuries.
The incident took place along the recently rehabilitated Ikangba/Agoro Road as the students were walking home after completing their exam.
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck, approaching from the Molipa axis, suddenly veered off its lane, struck the students, and eventually crashed into the fence of a nearby Redeemed Christian Church of God.
Mr. Eko Nicholas, a local resident and Chairman of the Ogun State chapter of the Campaign for Democratic and Workers’ Rights (CDWR), confirmed that the students were WASSCE candidates, citing the exam papers found in their possession.
“This is yet another preventable tragedy on this road,” Nicholas lamented. “Since February, six lives have been lost here. The road lacks speed bumps and streetlights, despite being close to several schools. We’ve petitioned the government, but there’s been no action.”
He urged the Ogun State government to take immediate steps to install speed control measures and street lighting to avert further tragedies.
Mr. Babatunde Akinbiyi, Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), confirmed the accident, stating that TRACE officials responded to the scene and that one student had been confirmed dead.
