Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his son, Alhaji Aliyu Atiku, have been stripped of their traditional titles in the Adamawa Emirate following the implementation of a new state policy on traditional council membership.
Atiku, who was appointed Waziri Adamawa in February 2023, and his son, the Turaki Adamawa, lost their titles under a directive issued by the Adamawa State Government mandating that only indigenes of a given emirate or chiefdom may serve as kingmakers or council members.
The policy was communicated in a circular signed by Adama Felicity Mamman, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs.
It specifies that only individuals from local government areas such as Yola South, Yola North, Girei, Mayo-Belwa, Song, and Zumo are eligible to serve in the Adamawa Emirate Council. Similarly, participation in the Mubi Emirate Council is limited to natives of Mubi North and Mubi South.
Atiku and his son, being natives of Jada Local Government Area, fall under the Ganye Chiefdom, making them ineligible for titles within the Adamawa Emirate under the new rule.
The Waziri Adamawa title, which ranks second only to the Lamido of Adamawa, was conferred on Atiku just last year by the emirate’s traditional ruler.
