The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, was notably absent from the 2025 Ojude Oba Festival due to health-related reasons, according to the event’s coordinator, Dr. Fassy Yusuff.

Speaking on Monday, Yusuff disclosed that the 91-year-old monarch is currently recuperating at home after being discharged from a hospital in Lagos last Thursday, following a two-week stay.

The absence of the Awujale surprised many of the thousands who gathered in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, for Sunday’s festivities.

The monarch’s presence is traditionally a central part of the celebration, where he receives homage from various groups in a vibrant display of Ijebu culture.

“He was hospitalised in Lagos two weeks ago but was discharged last Thursday. He is now recovering at home,” Yusuff said in a statement to our correspondent, assuring the public that there is no cause for alarm.

In his stead, the Awujale’s wife, Olori Kemi Adetona, represented him at the festival.

The Ojude Oba Festival is a major cultural event in southwestern Nigeria, attracting participants and spectators from across the nation and beyond.
