Former Nigerian sprint icon and African 100m record holder, Olusoji Fasuba, has sharply criticized the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) following the recent announcement that sprinter Favour Ofili has switched allegiance to Turkey.
Ofili’s decision, made public on Sunday, comes just three months ahead of the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
The 22-year-old reportedly cited ongoing frustration with the AFN not financial incentives as the primary reason for her move, according to information she shared with the Athletics Integrity Unit.
In response, AFN President Tonobok Okowa criticized Ofili’s attitude during her time representing Nigeria. But Fasuba condemned the AFN’s handling of the situation, calling it a reflection of failed leadership.
Speaking on Lagos Talks 91.3FM on Monday, Fasuba remarked “leadership isn’t about control; it’s about serving and uniting people to achieve common goals. That’s where the AFN has failed.”
He warned that Ofili’s departure could prompt more athletes to consider leaving Nigeria’s athletics program, especially given the lack of consistent support and investment.
“You can’t expect Olympic medals by throwing around $5,000 or $10,000 in training grants and calling it adequate. That’s a joke.”
Fasuba also expressed unwavering support for Ofili, a 200m finalist at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
“I support her 101 percent. She was mistreated, and the person responsible is still in office without consequences. How do you expect her to perform under that kind of pressure?”
He concluded that, under the current circumstances, Ofili’s decision to switch allegiances was both understandable and justified.
