Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has urged young winger Yan Diomande to improve his finishing and decision-making in front of goal, insisting that greater composure in the final third will be crucial to fulfilling his potential at the Spanish club.
According to a report by Fabrizio Romano on Monday, Mourinho made the remarks after Real Madrid’s victory over Sevilla on Sunday, acknowledging the teenager’s contribution while highlighting areas that require improvement.
“I am very happy with Diomande. He has a lot to work on, and he has many things he needs to improve. He needs to work on his finishing,” Mourinho said.
The Portuguese tactician added that the winger’s ability to find dangerous positions was encouraging but stressed the need for him to remain calm and make better decisions with his final touch.
“He gets to a lot of dangerous positions, but he needs to learn to relax more and make a better decision in the last touch,” he added.
At 19, Diomande, an Ivory Coast international, is still developing his game at the highest level. His movement, pace and ability to threaten opposition defences have offered encouraging signs, but converting those opportunities into goals remains an important part of his development.
For a club with Real Madrid’s expectations, attacking players are judged not only by their ability to create danger but also by how effectively they turn chances into goals. Improving his composure and accuracy could therefore help Diomande become a more decisive presence in the team.
Mourinho’s comments reflect the balance between recognising a young player’s promise and demanding the consistency required at an elite club. Rather than dismissing the winger’s contribution, the manager’s assessment points to finishing as a key area that could determine how quickly Diomande progresses.
