After more than three decades, the Federal Government has finally honored its promise to the 1994 Super Eagles team by allocating houses to the players who won the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development announced the development in a statement published on its website on Wednesday.

Among the recipients was former striker Efan Ekoku, who received an official letter for a housing allocation in Abuja. He was represented at the ceremony by his niece, Lisa Jenifer Nwagbogun.

The letter was presented by Pemi Temitope, Director and Head of the Public Building and Housing Development Department, on behalf of the Minister of Housing.

Temitope said the gesture reflects the government’s continued dedication to recognizing the patriotic contributions of the team that brought pride to Nigeria 31 years ago.

Speaking on behalf of her uncle, Nwagbogun expressed appreciation for the long-awaited fulfillment, stating, “I sincerely thank the Federal Government and the Ministry of Housing for keeping their word. This act not only celebrates Mr. Ekoku’s service but also renews trust in the government’s commitment to its promises.”

It’s worth noting that the implementation of the 1994 housing pledge was approved by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2022, nearly 28 years after the initial commitment.

Housing units are being distributed to team members across various states, with some, like Ekoku, receiving theirs in the Federal Capital Territory.
