Renowned Nigerian highlife musician Mike Ejeagha, affectionately known as “Gentleman Mike Ejeagha,” has died at the age of 95.
His death was confirmed by his eldest son, Emma Ejeagha, who told reporters in Enugu that the legendary artist passed away around 8 p.m. on Friday at the 32 Garrison Hospital, Enugu, following a prolonged illness.
“My father passed away due to a long-standing ailment,” Emma said.
Born on April 4, 1930, in Imezi Owa, Enugu State, Ejeagha was a towering figure in Igbo highlife music.
He gained national prominence from the 1960s through the 1980s with timeless hits such as Omekagu, Uwa Mgbede Ka Mma, and Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche (Gwogwogwongwo).
Known for weaving rich storytelling and traditional Igbo proverbs into his music, Ejeagha used his songs to preserve and promote Igbo culture.
With over 300 recordings to his name, much of his work has been archived by the National Archives of Nigeria for its cultural significance.
In recent years, his influence extended to a younger generation, especially after a viral 2024 dance challenge brought renewed attention to his 1983 track Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche.
Ejeagha’s passing marks the end of an era in Nigerian highlife. Yet, his enduring music and cultural legacy continue to inspire and educate across generations.
