The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has apprehended a man named Alexander Peter for allegedly killing his 71-year-old mother, Mrs. Atiny Peter, with a machete.

The tragic event took place in Ikot Inyang village, situated within Oruk Anam Local Government Area of the state.

Confirming the arrest during a press briefing on Thursday at the police headquarters in Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, stated that the suspect was taken into custody on June 10. He added that investigations are actively ongoing to uncover the motive behind the violent act.

“The gruesome incident occurred in Ikot Inyang Village, Oruk Anam Local Government Area, where the suspect reportedly used the machete to hack his mother to death,” Azare said, further explaining that the police are working to “unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the motive behind the heinous crime.”

The Commissioner also revealed that 54 individuals had been arrested across the state in the past six weeks for various criminal activities.

In the same period, the command successfully recovered over 50 weapons and rounds of ammunition.

The brutal killing has sent shockwaves through the local community, as residents express disbelief and sorrow over the death of the elderly woman allegedly at the hands of her son.

Authorities indicated that further information will be made available as the investigation unfolds.
