The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially reinstated Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary, ending months of internal disputes and leadership uncertainty.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum announced the decision, emphasizing that it reflects the party’s commitment to unity, legality, and due process.

Anyanwu, a former senator representing Imo East, was elected National Secretary during the party’s 2021 National Convention. However, controversy erupted in 2023 after he became the PDP’s governorship candidate in Imo State. Party factions argued that by seeking elective office, Anyanwu had effectively vacated his national position, citing constitutional provisions that prohibit dual roles.

The resulting conflict sparked legal battles and efforts by some groups within the party to install a replacement or appoint an acting secretary.

Following the conclusion of the 2023 Imo governorship election which saw Anyanwu lose to incumbent Governor Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC), his supporters pushed for his return to the party’s national leadership.

After weeks of internal consultations and legal reviews, the NWC resolved the impasse by affirming Anyanwu’s return as National Secretary.

The move is seen as part of broader efforts to stabilize the PDP’s leadership structure and foster unity ahead of the 2027 general elections, as the party works to reposition itself as Nigeria’s leading opposition platform.
