Segun Showunmi has firmly denied a recent claim by Reno Omokri that he was hired by the former presidential aide to serve as part of Atiku Abubakar’s 2019 media team.

During an appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast released Monday night, Omokri recounted.

“Atiku wanted me to be his spokesperson. I declined, saying I wouldn’t go from being a presidential spokesman to a campaign spokesman. But I hired his media team. I interviewed Segun Showunmi and set his salary.”

Showunmi, who indeed served as Atiku’s spokesperson during the 2019 presidential campaign, took to X (formerly Twitter) to refute the statement. Responding to a post by user Imran Muhammad, he wrote.

“It’s a waste of saliva responding to this rubbish. Amina Jambo got Lulu Obaifo to convince me to meet Waziri (Atiku). I asked my questions, went through Uyi Giwa Osagie, and eventually agreed after several consultations.”

He added “the younger man is delusional. I first saw him in Dubai at a Defence of London ad event. If you want to believe Reno’s endless rant, be my guest.”

“Ask him what the terms were and what role Atiku’s then Chief of Staff, the Maiduguri man, played. ‘Hire ko, hire ni.’”

Showunmi further criticized Omokri’s credibility, accusing him of spreading misinformation in the past.

“Na who no know Reno dey listen to his trash!”

The full podcast episode spans over an hour, with Omokri touching on topics such as his ties with Atiku and Goodluck Jonathan, his current support for President Tinubu, and an anecdote involving Pat Utomi allegedly helping him make his first million dollars.
