Mr-Segun-Sowunmi

The former spokesperson to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Segun Sowunmi has responded to recent claims made by former presidential aide Reno Omokri and ex-PDP spokesman Olisa Metuh regarding how he was appointed as Atiku’s spokesman.

While speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast, Omokri stated that he was instrumental in hiring Sowunmi. According to him, he conducted an interview with Sowunmi, negotiated his salary, and informed Atiku of the arrangement.

“If I’m anything, I’m a meticulous record keeper. In May 2018, Olisa Metuh recommended Segun Sowunmi for the role of Atiku’s spokesman. I spoke with Segun from California, negotiated his pay, and later informed Atiku. He was announced based on the terms I discussed with him,” Omokri said.

Backing Omokri’s version, Metuh confirmed he recommended Sowunmi for the role. “Reno asked me to suggest someone for the position. At first, I considered Deji Adeyanju, but he had left the PDP. Then I remembered Segun and gave Reno his contact,” Metuh explained.

However, Sowunmi dismissed their accounts as inaccurate. He insisted he knows exactly how he met Atiku, and neither Omokri nor Metuh played any part.

“It’s a waste of breath responding to such nonsense,” Sowunmi said. “My friend Amina Jambo asked Lulu Obaifo to convince me to meet Waziri. I later connected with Uyi Giwa Osagie, then got a call from OGD while they were in Dubai. I traveled to Abuja, reached an agreement with Atiku, and met people like Dane Waters, Eta Uso, and Yemi Hilda. That’s how it happened, none of them involved Reno or Metuh.”

Describing Omokri as “delusional,” Sowunmi questioned the accuracy of his claims. “I first saw him during a defense of London advertising in Dubai. If he truly hired me, let him state the terms. What was the role of Atiku’s Chief of Staff at the time?”

Sowunmi also dismissed Metuh’s remarks, calling them laughable. “Is that not the same Metuh involved in the EFCC’s campaign fund case? He had no effective response to Lai Mohammed as APC spokesman until I stepped up. These people just want to brag. I know how I got the job, and their stories don’t add up.”

He concluded by emphasizing that there are more pressing national issues than “Reno’s fabrications and Metuh’s jokes.”
