President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to address a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday, June 12, in commemoration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day. The event will take place at the House of Representatives Chamber in the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

Democracy Day, observed annually on June 12, honours the historic 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest. The election was won by the late Chief Moshood Abiola but was controversially annulled by then military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd).

In a statement issued on Sunday, House of Representatives spokesman, Akin Rotimi, confirmed the event, noting that members were officially informed through an internal memo from the Clerk of the House, Yahaya Danzaria.

In a statement released, the special joint sitting will begin at 11:00 a.m., with President Tinubu expected to arrive at 12:00 noon to deliver a presidential address. This year’s Democracy Day theme is “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.”

The programme will also include goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly, as well as the conferment of national honours on selected lawmakers by the President.

“This joint sitting represents a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey,” the statement read. “It highlights the vital role of the National Assembly in upholding democratic principles, promoting accountability, and fostering national development over the past 26 years of uninterrupted civil rule.”

The House further called on Nigerians to use Democracy Day as an opportunity for reflection and renewed dedication to building a more inclusive, prosperous, and united nation.
