Rotimi-Amaechi

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared that he will serve only a single four-year term if he emerges as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate in the 2027 general election.

Amaechi made this statement during an appearance on Politics Today, a Channels TV program hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, on Thursday.

Explaining his position, Amaechi emphasized the importance of maintaining Nigeria’s informal power rotation agreement between the north and the south, especially after President Bola Tinubu, a southerner, completes his first term.

“For now, the way Nigeria is, you must stick to that unwritten agreement that says south eight years, north eight years,” said Amaechi, who is also a former governor of Rivers State.

He referenced his opposition to the PDP during his time in office, stating that he fought against the party when it failed to uphold a similar power-sharing understanding.

“I led the fight against the PDP government because there was an agreement that the government would spend four years. When that was broken, I stood my ground and insisted on fairness, knowing that a northern backlash could cause instability,” he said.

“Just like I supported the north then, I’ll now insist the south be allowed to finish its term.”

When asked directly by Okinbaloye if he would commit to a single term, Amaechi responded “of course. Nigerians know I speak my mind. What I cannot do, I will not promise.”

Amaechi also criticized the Tinubu administration, asserting that it has worsened living conditions for Nigerians and deserves to be voted out in 2027.

The former minister is among prominent political figures backing the ADC, which is positioning itself as a platform for a broad opposition coalition ahead of the next elections.
