The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the All Progressives Congress (APC) for asserting that there will be “no vacancy in Aso Rock” in 2027, calling the statement undemocratic and insensitive to the struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC argued that leadership is not a birthright but must be earned through performance and renewed through credible elections.
The remark in question was made by APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, during a meeting at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja, and was widely interpreted as a signal of President Bola Tinubu’s intent to seek re-election.
Responding, the ADC said the comment dismisses the electorate’s right to assess and decide based on the ruling party’s track record.
“The APC Chairman’s ‘no vacancy’ comment is both presumptuous and disrespectful to Nigerians who face hunger, insecurity, and joblessness. It sends a dangerous message that their votes no longer matter,” the ADC stated.
The party insisted that there will indeed be a vacancy in 2027, and President Tinubu will have to justify why he deserves another term despite policies that it claims have worsened citizens’ lives.
“Elections are about performance. In 2027, Nigerians will evaluate APC’s record based on key indicators youth employment, security, poverty, electricity, and justice.”
The ADC further criticized what it described as the APC’s self-praise amidst deepening hardship across the country, including rising food prices, worsening insecurity, and a weakened naira.
“To suggest ‘no vacancy’ two years before the election is to undermine democracy and mock the pain of ordinary Nigerians. APC must reapply for the job and cannot grade itself.”
