Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has announced that a coalition of opposition leaders will throw their weight behind the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Amaechi emphasized that the coalition is united in its commitment to a transparent, free, and fair primary process, with all members pledging to back whoever emerges as the ADC’s presidential candidate.
Amaechi, once a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), expressed deep concern over worsening economic conditions in the country, including increasing hunger and hardship.
He called on residents of Rivers State to join the ADC in what he described as a movement to unseat the ruling party and redirect the nation’s course.
The ADC has been adopted as the platform for the coalition’s challenge to President Bola Tinubu’s expected re-election bid.
The alliance brings together several high-profile political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and former Senate President David Mark, who currently serves as the interim chairman of the coalition.
At the coalition’s formal unveiling on July 2, Mark said the initiative was born out of a need to protect Nigeria’s democracy and to prevent what he called the danger of a one-party state.
