Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his heartfelt condolences over the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a revered leader known for his statesmanship and dedication to strengthening India–Nigeria relations.
In a message shared on his official X account on Monday, Modi reflected on his personal interactions with Buhari, recalling their meaningful discussions and the late leader’s insightful nature, warmth, and firm support for bilateral cooperation.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria. I fondly remember our meetings and conversations over the years. His wisdom, warmth, and steadfast commitment to the India–Nigeria partnership were truly admirable,” Modi stated.
He further noted, “On behalf of the 1.4 billion citizens of India, I extend my deepest sympathies to his family, the Nigerian people, and the government.”
Buhari, aged 81, passed away in London and will be buried in his hometown of Daura on Monday in accordance with Islamic traditions. He previously ruled Nigeria as a military leader between 1983 and 1985 and later served as a civilian president from 2015 to 2023.
