A man, aged 56, narrowly escaped death after being pulled out of an 80-foot-deep well by personnel of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service in the Ikotun area of Lagos State.

The incident, which occurred over the weekend, was confirmed on Tuesday in a statement issued by the Senior Public Affairs Officer of the LSFRS, Maria Fadairo.

She explained that the man had been working inside the well when he became stuck.

Fadairo said, “The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Ejigbo Station, received a distress call over the weekend reporting an individual trapped inside a well.

“The rescue team swiftly mobilised and arrived at the scene at House 12, Aiyeola Street, off Governor Road, Molad Bus Stop, Ikotun, within the Ikotun-Igando LCDA, Lagos.

“Upon arrival, it was discovered that a male adult, approximately 56 years old, had become trapped while working inside a well estimated to be 80 feet deep.”

She also pointed out that findings at the scene indicated negligence may have contributed to the incident, and she advised residents to always notify emergency services before carrying out risky activities.

“The incident occurred at the rear of a bungalow comprising eight rooms of varying sizes, situated on a property covering approximately 648 square metres.

“The victim was successfully rescued through the coordinated efforts of the firefighters. Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident might have resulted from negligence.

“The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, reiterated the importance of notifying the agency whenever hazardous jobs are to be undertaken,” Fadairo concluded.
