President Bola Tinubu assured Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Saturday that Nigeria is actively tackling obstacles slowing its agricultural growth, particularly bureaucratic delays.

These reforms aim to strengthen food sovereignty and boost exports, with a special focus on livestock production.

The commitment was made during a bilateral meeting at Copacabana Forte, attended by cabinet officials from both countries.

According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu outlined ongoing efforts to improve Nigeria’s competitiveness globally, especially in agriculture a sector where the country holds natural advantages.

He also detailed plans to streamline cooperation across trade, aviation, energy transition, food production, mining, and natural resource exploration.

Tinubu praised Brazil’s cutting-edge research and development in food production as a valuable model for Nigeria to follow.

Highlighting increased investment in poultry, cattle, fisheries, and the blue economy, the Nigerian president called for strong bilateral partnerships to accelerate agricultural output.

He underscored the important role state governments play alongside federal initiatives to drive employment and economic growth through agriculture.

President Lula pledged to formalize agreements and expedite memoranda of understanding ahead of Tinubu’s next visit.

Both leaders agreed that reducing bureaucratic hurdles is essential for rapid progress, with Brazilian research institutions set to collaborate on livestock farming improvements.

Senator Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture, reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to food security through domestic and international partnerships, citing the country’s fertilizer production capacity as a key advantage.

Minister of Livestock Development Idi Maiha highlighted areas for collaboration with Brazil, including animal health, disease control, sanitary services, and genetic research.

Governors from Benue, Ogun, Niger, Delta, and Lagos states attended the meeting, with Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun expressing support for federal agricultural reforms and welcoming the inclusion of a business forum during Tinubu’s upcoming state visit to Brazil.
