The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has urged youths in Northern Nigeria to disregard recent comments by its former presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, alleging that the Federal Government is marginalising the region.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Lagos by the party’s National Secretary, Dr. Olaposi Oginni, the NNPP described Kwankwaso’s remarks as misleading, unfounded, and an attempt to stir unnecessary tension across the country.
Kwankwaso had recently criticised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing it of sidelining the North in the distribution of road projects. But the NNPP condemned the statement, describing it as reckless and unbecoming of a supposed elder statesman.
“The NNPP views with deep concern the baseless claim by Kwankwaso alleging marginalization of the North. At a time when the country faces several challenges, it is unfortunate that a former senator, minister, and governor would choose to stoke division with unsubstantiated allegations,” the party said.
The party emphasized that Kwankwaso’s actions were part of a pattern that led to his expulsion from the NNPP. It accused him of making statements on behalf of the party even after he ceased to be a member and dragging the NNPP into needless litigations.
“As we move closer to the 2027 general elections, the public must expect more politicians like Kwankwaso to resort to misinformation and propaganda,” the statement added. “Nigerians deserve issue-based engagements, not deliberate falsehoods meant to incite.”
The NNPP maintained that the Tinubu-led administration has implemented more road infrastructure projects in the North than in other regions, urging the public to verify this through available records.
“A true elder statesman should lead with integrity, honesty, and facts. What Kwankwaso is doing is far from that. His latest comment only further confirms why the NNPP had to part ways with him,” the statement noted.
The party called on Northern youths to scrutinise Kwankwaso’s track record in public service, whether as a senator, minister, or governor and compare it with the development strides currently being made in the region.
“The North must not fall for political antics. They must investigate every claim with facts. The records of federal projects are public and speak for themselves,” the party added.
The Presidency has already dismissed Kwankwaso’s marginalisation claims as baseless, while the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, clarified that the Northern region currently hosts the highest number of ongoing road projects in the country.
