The management of Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, formerly known as The Polytechnic, Ibadan, has issued a firm warning to students against participating in a planned protest scheduled for today (Tuesday).
In a statement released on Monday by the Acting Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Joseph Ogunjimi, the institution called on parents and guardians to advise their wards against engaging in any form of demonstration.
This development comes in the wake of a protest held the previous Tuesday, which was triggered by the Oyo State Government’s decision to rename the institution in honor of the late former governor, Omololu Olunloyo, who recently passed away at the age of 89.
Angered by the renaming, students disrupted academic activities and marched to the Governor’s Office in Agodi, Ibadan.
They carried placards bearing messages such as “Revert The Name Now,” “We Were Not Consulted,” and “Our Identity, Our Pride,” demanding that the original name of the polytechnic be restored, citing a lack of stakeholder consultation.
Reacting to reports of a fresh protest being planned, the school management issued a statement titled.
“Poly Management Cautions Students’ Union on Planned Protest, Advises Parents to Call Them to Order.”
The statement referenced intelligence reports indicating that students may attempt to block the school gates as part of the protest.
“The management advises the Students’ Union and the entire student body not to engage in any protest or obstruct access to the institution,” the statement read.
“Any act that disturbs public peace or undermines the interests of the institution or the state government will be viewed seriously and addressed accordingly.”
“Security agencies, in collaboration with the school’s internal security team, have been mobilized to ensure law and order are maintained.”
Parents were once again urged to caution their children against taking part in any disruptive activities.
