The United Republic of Tanzania has formally endorsed Nigeria’s candidacy for Category C membership of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, citing longstanding bilateral ties and Nigeria’s previous support for Tanzania’s own IMO ambitions.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by Bolaji Akinola, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola.

Tanzania’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Selestine Kakele, described the two countries as natural partners with shared goals in maritime development.

He noted that Tanzania’s support is rooted in mutual respect and a vision for Africa’s stronger representation in global maritime affairs.

“Tanzania values Nigeria’s consistent support and sees this partnership as key to advancing maritime growth across the continent,” Kakele stated in a letter to Minister Oyetola.

Kakele also announced plans to send a team of Tanzanian maritime experts to Nigeria to study its marine and blue economy structures and collaborate with key institutions under the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.

Minister Oyetola welcomed the gesture and expressed gratitude for Tanzania’s endorsement. He emphasized that Nigeria’s election to the IMO Council would amplify Africa’s voice in shaping international maritime policy.

“A seat for Nigeria at the IMO Council is a voice for Africa,” Oyetola said. “It will allow us to push for safer shipping, sustainable marine resources, and equitable trade practices.”

He highlighted current initiatives within the Ministry, including efforts to establish a national shipping line through public-private partnerships and to enhance intra-African maritime trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Oyetola also encouraged cross-border investments, urging Nigerian stakeholders to explore opportunities in Tanzania, while inviting Tanzanian investors to engage in Nigeria’s marine and blue economy sector.

“The future of Africa’s economic strength lies in maritime collaboration,” Oyetola said. “We welcome your proposed delegation and will ensure a productive and supportive engagement.”
