killed after being crushed by an articulated vehicle in Fiditi, Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening along the new Ibadan–Oyo Expressway as the victims were returning from a trip to Ibadan.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened when the trailer driver swerved in an attempt to avoid potholes on the road.
One of the witnesses, who spoke with PUNCH Online on Monday, said, “The driver of the trailer was trying to avoid the potholes, and in the process, he ran over the victims.
“The victims were a man and a woman. The man died immediately while the woman was rushed to an undisclosed hospital, but she also died a few hours later.”
It was gathered that the motorcyclist died on the spot, while the second victim succumbed to injuries despite efforts to save her life at a nearby hospital.
When contacted, the Deputy Corps Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (Operations) in Oyo State, Bayode Olugbesan, confirmed the incident.
He said, “Only one person was pronounced dead as of yesterday, but the command has embarked on a hospital follow-up because the road safety officials cannot confirm that an accident victim is dead until a doctor certifies that.”
The accident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by poor road conditions on major highways across the state.
