Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has approved a N20 billion provision in the supplementary budget to intensify the overhaul of school infrastructure across the state.
The new allocation, which builds on the administration’s previous efforts, is aimed at accelerating the ongoing upgrade of public school facilities, a process initiated in 2020 following the restoration of Kwara’s collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
“This fresh N20 billion intervention is part of our continued commitment to transforming public education in Kwara,” said Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, in a statement on Monday. “The planning phase is already underway, with designs being finalized. Implementation will begin once the supplementary budget receives approval.”
According to the commissioner, the latest investment is not an isolated effort but rather an expansion of what the administration has already accomplished. Since 2019, the AbdulRazaq-led government has rehabilitated or constructed over 1,254 classrooms, alongside several other education-related interventions.
He also highlighted that the administration remains the only one in the state’s history to have fully implemented SUBEB-UBEC intervention projects dating back to 2014.
The new round of infrastructure work will include classrooms, science laboratories, and improved sanitation facilities, and will target schools across different regions of the state to complement existing SUBEB-led projects.
“While we’ve made significant progress, we acknowledge that infrastructure gaps still exist. This additional funding is a deliberate effort by His Excellency to bridge those gaps and ensure a conducive learning environment for all pupils across the state,” Olohungbebe added.
