A 37-year-old man, Nicholas Giroux, has been sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 20 years for the murder of Nigerian-American boxer, Isaiah Olugbemi, in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

Giroux was sentenced on Friday afternoon by Judge Richard Trunnell of the Anne Arundel County Circuit Court after pleading guilty to first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in a violent crime. The sentences will be served consecutively at the Division of Corrections.

Olugbemi, 27, a rising star in amateur boxing and a father, was shot multiple times by Giroux on June 17, 2024, in the 500 block of Meadowmist Way, Odenton.

The victim was found with multiple gunshot wounds and later died at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. An autopsy confirmed the death as a homicide caused by gunfire.

Surveillance footage from the scene captured Giroux approaching Olugbemi, shooting him repeatedly until he collapsed, then firing three more rounds before fleeing the scene. Police recovered 9mm cartridge casings from the location.

Investigators revealed that Giroux had previously confronted Olugbemi and a neighbor at a cookout two weeks prior, during which he brandished a handgun but did not point it at anyone.

After the murder, Giroux confessed during questioning and led authorities to the location of the firearm used in the killing.

Anne Colt Leitess, the State’s Attorney, described the murder as “cruel and senseless,” noting that Olugbemi had a promising future in boxing.

She said, “Mr. Olugbemi was a father and a rising star in amateur boxing. The callousness and lack of remorse shown by this defendant are deeply disturbing. He deserves this sentence. I hope this brings some sense of justice to his family and friends who have suffered from this tragic loss.”

The case was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Carolynn Grammas, and the investigation was led by homicide detectives from the Anne Arundel County Police Department.
