Chelsea’s preparations for the 2025/26 season have taken a hit after young defender Levi Colwill sustained a serious injury during pre-season training.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Chelsea’s friendly matches against Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan, manager Enzo Maresca confirmed the 22-year-old had picked up the injury earlier in the week, which casts doubt over his availability for the start of the new campaign.

With Colwill facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines, the Blues are now expected to explore the transfer market for a possible replacement.

With this development, Insight Media Sports Arena looks at three available centre-backs Chelsea could consider:

Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace (£40m)

A familiar name to Chelsea fans, former academy graduate Marc Guehi has flourished at Crystal Palace and is now one of the most consistent defenders in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old, who captained Palace last season and recently took on the armband permanently, is reportedly available for just £40 million, with his current contract set to expire next summer. Proven at the top level and a natural leader, Guehi would represent a smart, low-risk signing and a potential long-term solution at the back.

Murillo of Nottingham Forest

Another Premier League option is Murillo, the highly-rated Brazilian centre-back from Nottingham Forest. Chelsea were previously linked with a move for the 22-year-old and even made a club-record offer in January, which Forest turned down.

Murillo is under contract until 2029, meaning any transfer would likely come with a hefty price tag. However, his left-footed profile and ball-playing ability make him a strong tactical fit for Maresca’s system, especially in light of Colwill’s absence.

Piero Hincapie of Bayer Leverkusen (£51m clause)

Should Chelsea look outside the Premier League, Piero Hincapie of Bayer Leverkusen stands out as another promising candidate. The Ecuadorian defender has a £51 million release clause, making him more accessible than Murillo.

While he lacks Premier League experience, Hincapie excels in progressive play, he ranks in the 95th percentile for progressive carries and 84th percentile for progressive passes among centre-backs, according to FBref. At just 22 years old, he would bring both youth and technical quality to the Chelsea backline.

With the transfer window still open and Colwill’s timeline for return uncertain, Chelsea may be forced to act swiftly. While the club’s focus had initially been on reinforcing the attack, defensive reinforcements may now become a priority.
