The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, Mahmood Adegbite, has raised concerns over the quality of borehole water in the Lekki area, stating that many residents may unknowingly be consuming contaminated water.

Speaking during a recent stakeholders’ meeting, Adegbite warned that untreated wastewater in the area could pose serious health risks, especially for those relying on boreholes for drinking water.

“Anyone drilling a borehole in Lekki is likely consuming what I would call ‘contaminated or faecal water,’” he said.

He stressed the importance of wastewater treatment as a solution to prevent waterborne diseases and improve public health in the area. Adegbite noted that the government has plans in place to manage and treat wastewater in Lekki.

In addition, he addressed the ongoing challenge of flooding in Lagos, stating that although significant investments have been made, more efforts are still required.

“Just yesterday, we experienced heavy rainfall despite this period usually being an August break. The rains are returning due to complex climate-related issues,” he said. “We’ve spent a lot on flood control, but there’s still much more to be done.”
