Nigerian Afrobeat star and songwriter, Chike Osebuka, has revealed he currently has no interest in marriage, calling it a “stupid step.”
The 32-year-old singer, widely known for his romantic ballads and soulful voice, made this statement during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo.
When asked about his plans for marriage, Chike was blunt “in my personal opinion, I think it’s a stupid step to get married. That’s just how I see it.”
Chike also shared that his happiness is closely tied to financial security.
“For me to be happy, to be honest, I need a lot of money. This isn’t even about being materialistic. I like money. I want money,” he added.
Reflecting on his journey, Chike admitted that music wasn’t always a clear path for him.
“It was only after university that I realized music could be a career. Before then, I just sang for fun and disturbed everyone around me,” he said.
He recalled tough times when he had to take up acting roles just to make ends meet.
“It was a hard period. I had to act for about two years just to survive,” he said.
Chike opened up about a particularly painful experience when he tried to organize a show early in his career.
“The show cost maybe N400,000 not a lot, because most of it came through favours. I reached out to friends I used to hang out with, just to ask for help,” he said.
“Some didn’t even respond. They just stopped picking my calls. I wasn’t angry about not getting the money, I was hurt they couldn’t be honest with me.”
He recounted breaking down in front of a close female friend who ended up saving the day.
“I cried. I let it out for the first time. She looked at me and said, ‘Chike, don’t worry. I’ll give you the money — just go and focus.’ And she did.”
Chike launched his music career in 2015 after participating in Project Fame. In 2016, he gained national recognition as the first runner-up in The Voice Nigeria, and released his debut single Fancy later that year.
