Akure, Ondo State – The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of two staff members of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) by gunmen in the Akoko South West Local Government Area of the state.

The victims were reportedly abducted on Monday evening from their residence along Supare-Akoko Road in Akungba-Akoko.

One of the victims, Omoniyi Eleyinmi, a faculty officer in the Faculty of Education and a member of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) at AAUA, was taken around 7:00 p.m., according to reports.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Olushola Ayanlade, confirmed the incident, stating that swift action by security operatives led to the rescue of one of the abductees.

“Yes, two AAUA staff were abducted by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers,” Ayanlade said. “However, our men responded quickly and were able to rescue one of them.”

He added that the state Commissioner of Police has directed that the rescued individual be debriefed to gather intelligence that may aid in locating and rescuing the remaining staff member.

Security operatives have since intensified search efforts in the surrounding areas, while the identity of the second victim remains undisclosed.
