A herbalist known only as Alfa is on the run after allegedly preparing a concoction that led to the death of a suspected internet fraudster, identified as Sunday, in Mararaba, Nasarawa State.
According to the Nasarawa State Police Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel, the incident occurred after Sunday and his friend, identified simply as Tosin, visited Alfa to obtain a charm intended to aid their Advance Fee fraud activities.
Nansel explained that the herbalist prepared a portion for both men, but shortly after consuming it, they began experiencing severe stomach pain.
“The two young men went to a herbalist to prepare a charm for them. They wanted to make money from their Advance Fee fraud. So, the herbalist prepared a concoction for them. Immediately after drinking that, they started to experience stomach upset. They were taken to the hospital, where one of them died while receiving treatment, and the other is still responding to treatment,” he said.
The police spokesperson added that a vigilante member who accompanied the men to Alfa’s house had been arrested.
“The herbalist is currently on the run, but efforts are ongoing to apprehend him. The suspect in custody has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation,” Nansel noted.
This incident comes weeks after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission announced the arrest of no fewer than 17 suspected internet fraudsters in Mararaba. In its July statement, the EFCC said the operation was intelligence-led and that exhibits recovered included mobile phones, vehicles, and laptops.
