The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr. Zacch Adedeji, has emphasised that a people-first approach to tax administration is essential for enhancing efficiency, fostering innovation, and driving national development.
Speaking at the recent Annual Performance Award and Retiree Send-Off Ceremony in Abuja, Dr. Adedeji said that recognising and motivating staff is key to achieving the Service’s objectives and improving revenue performance.
The event honoured exceptional employees and celebrated long-serving retirees, underscoring FIRS’s commitment to valuing its workforce.
“Every award, every handshake, every public ‘thank you’ is an investment in our nation’s future,” he noted, stressing that recognition is not just ceremonial but a strategic investment. “Building an effective tax administration starts with building motivated people.”
According to him, acknowledging high-performing staff and retirees helps strengthen core values such as integrity, professionalism, and dedication — principles he said are vital for improving taxpayer engagement, boosting revenue collection, and advancing the nation’s development goals.
Dr. Adedeji revealed that FIRS has adopted a performance evaluation system that goes beyond revenue targets. The assessment also factors in quality service delivery to taxpayers, staff-led innovations, and the overall sense of mission within the Service.
“This approach ensures employees are recognised for their total contribution to our success,” he explained. “When our people feel valued, they give their best and when they give their best, the entire country benefits.”
