The Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Hon. Aondona Hycenth Dajoh, has formally stepped down from his position, bringing an end to his tenure as the presiding officer of the state legislature.

His resignation was conveyed in a letter personally signed and dated Sunday, August 24, 2025, and addressed to members of the Assembly. The development was first reported by Channels Television.

In the letter titled “Resignation as the Speaker, Benue State House of Assembly”, Dajoh explained that his decision was made in good faith and in the overall interest of the state. He expressed gratitude to his colleagues for the confidence reposed in him since his election as Speaker.

“I write to resign my position as the Speaker, Benue State House of Assembly, effective today, August 24, 2025. This is done in good faith and in the best interest of the state. I want to appreciate my dear colleagues for the opportunity they gave me to be the first among equals,” the letter read in part.

While relinquishing the top legislative seat, Dajoh stressed that he would remain active in the Assembly and committed to representing the people of Gboko West State Constituency.

“I pledge to remain committed to my duties as a legislator and representative of Gboko West State Constituency,” he assured.

Although the reason for his sudden resignation was not explicitly stated, political observers suggest that it may not be unconnected with internal political dynamics and mounting pressure within the Assembly. Dajoh’s exit comes at a time when the state legislature has been grappling with intense debates on governance, oversight responsibilities, and legislative-executive relations.

As of the time of filing this report, the House had not announced his replacement. It is expected that members will, in the coming days, elect a new Speaker who will steer the affairs of the Assembly.

Dajoh, who emerged Speaker in 2023, has been a key figure in the state legislature, often described as a firm and pragmatic leader. His resignation marks a significant shift in Benue’s political landscape and sets the stage for possible realignments in the State House of Assembly.
