The Niger State House of Assembly has called on Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to issue an executive order banning sign-out celebrations in all secondary and tertiary institutions across the state.
The appeal came after a motion was raised by Hon. Mohammed Sani Idris, representing Tafa Constituency, who voiced concerns over the increasing disorder and violence associated with the celebrations.
“What started as a harmless way for students to mark the end of their academic journey has now turned into a breeding ground for chaos, misconduct, and violence,” Idris said. He added that some students take advantage of the events to settle personal disputes, often resulting in property damage and disruption of academic activities.
He cited a recent case in Kontagora where sign-out celebrations escalated into violence, forcing two schools to cancel final exams after students tore examination papers inside the hall.
Other lawmakers echoed Idris’ concerns, noting that the events have been hijacked by miscreants, leading to immoral acts and public disturbances. Hon. Muhammad Alhaji Haruna of Bida South described the celebrations as having “degenerated into bazaars of gangsterism and immorality,” while Hon. Murtala Badaru of Suleja pointed to rising public frustration over the situation.
Presiding over the session, Deputy Speaker Hon. Afiniki Eunice Dauda pledged to collaborate with the governor and the state Ministry of Education to ensure the proposed ban is enforced. She referenced a similar directive previously issued in the Kontagora Emirate and stressed the need for a comprehensive, statewide policy.
