The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a warning to Nigerian citizens, urging them to use their United States visas strictly in line with the stated purposes for which they were granted.

The advisory comes amid rising concerns from the U.S. government about instances of visa misuse by some Nigerian nationals.

In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja, the Service Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, emphasized the need for visa holders to comply fully with the terms and conditions attached to their visas.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service wishes to notify the public of concerns raised by the United States Government over the misuse of U.S. visas by some Nigerian citizens. All visa holders are therefore advised to strictly adhere to the purposes stated in their visa applications,” Akinlabi said.

He explained that U.S. immigration authorities carry out extensive screening even after a traveler has entered the country, and violations such as overstaying or engaging in unauthorized activities can lead to visa revocation, deportation, or even permanent travel bans.

Akinlabi also advised Nigerian students currently in the U.S. to remain enrolled in active academic programmes and avoid dropping out or prolonged absenteeism, which could lead to visa cancellation and jeopardize future travel opportunities.

In addition, the NIS noted that U.S. consular officers are within their rights to deny tourist visas to applicants suspected of planning to give birth in the U.S. solely to secure American citizenship for their children.

Reaffirming its commitment to maintaining strong ties with the United States, the NIS said it would continue to work closely with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigeria is not placed under broader visa restrictions.

The Service concluded by calling on all Nigerian citizens to respect U.S. immigration laws, noting that responsible conduct is key to preserving legitimate travel privileges.
