Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for a single five-year term for the Nigerian presidency, saying it would enhance focus and governance.

Speaking during a visit to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed on Friday, Obi said Nigeria should scrap the current two-term system in favor of a single term, similar to the model used in South Korea.

“If I have the opportunity, I will push for the end of second-term presidencies. It should be five years straight. Right now, presidents spend one year in office and the rest planning for re-election. Let’s do the job and move on,” Obi said at the Bauchi Government House.

Obi, who has expressed interest in running again in 2027, vowed to serve only one term if elected, stating he would not exceed four years.

He also emphasized the importance of strengthening political institutions, promising that under his leadership, political parties would be more influential than elected officials.

“Parties should be bigger than presidents and governors. That’s how we create order in the system,” he added.

In response, Governor Bala Mohammed urged Obi to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he said Obi truly belongs.

“We want you back in the PDP. Politics isn’t about ego or personal interest. Opposition parties must unite in the interest of Nigerians,” Mohammed said.
