Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, expressed confidence on Saturday that the state of emergency imposed in Rivers State will come to an end on September 18. He shared this information after voting in the ongoing local government election in the state.

Wike emphasized that the end of the emergency rule would allow the Rivers State House of Assembly to resume its legislative duties.

“As far as we’re concerned, the election is peaceful. People are coming out to vote, and by the end of the day, the election will have been conducted successfully and peacefully,” Wike said.

He also pointed out that the conditions were now favorable for lifting the state of emergency, as both the state and local governments have active representation.

“The state of emergency will be lifted because the state government has its representative and the local government now has its representatives. We are good to go,” he added.

The emergency rule, imposed by President Bola Tinubu, was originally intended to prevent a political crisis in the state. It led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the State House of Assembly for a period of six months.
