The rift between Davido and Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has taken a sharper turn, with one of the governor’s aides publicly declaring the singer unwelcome in the state for as long as Okpebholo remains in office.
Apostle Kassy Chukwu, the Senior Special Assistant on Digital Media to the governor, delivered the warning in a video posted on YouTube by Peniel TV International Benin City on Thursday, adding fuel to a feud that’s been simmering since last week’s Osun governorship election.
The bad blood traces back to comments Okpebholo made criticising Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, Davido’s uncle while campaigning in the state ahead of the August 15 poll. Davido didn’t take the jab lying down, firing back by posting what appeared to be Okpebholo’s WAEC result on his Instagram Story. When asked about it afterward, the singer stood firmly behind the post, insisting he had nothing to apologise for.
That defiance appears to have struck a nerve within the Edo governor’s camp. In the video, Chukwu didn’t mince words, telling Davido flatly that he’s now barred from performing anywhere in the state for the rest of the administration’s tenure.
“You have been banned from coming to Edo State to perform. We don’t want to see you in Edo again,” he said, accusing the singer of disrespecting the governor and his family.
Chukwu went further, claiming that youths in Edo were furious over Davido’s remarks and suggesting the singer could face real hostility if he ever set foot in the state again even at the airport.
“Edo youths are angry. They said if they catch you again, nobody should bring Davido to come and perform in any place again in Edo State,” he said.
He also took aim at the WAEC result Davido had shared, alleging it had been doctored, and cautioned the singer against posting anything similar in the future.
For his part, Davido has maintained that he was simply defending his uncle and giving Osun residents information about a governor who’d travelled into their state to campaign against Adeleke. He’s also pushed back at Okpebholo directly, questioning why the governor left his own state to get involved in Osun’s election in the first place, and raising doubts about his electoral legitimacy.
The aide’s latest comments have since sparked reactions online, with the video making the rounds as the standoff between the pop star and the governor shows little sign of cooling off.
