The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed allegations by governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that Nigeria is sliding into dictatorship under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.
The PDP Governors’ Forum, through a statement signed by its Director-General, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, claimed the nation was edging toward “full-blown dictatorship,” citing widespread poverty and abuse of power.
Responding in an interview with Sunday PUNCH, APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru described the claim as “baseless,” asserting that Nigeria remains a democracy governed by law.
“They should consult the dictionary for the meaning of dictatorship,” Basiru said. “We have a functioning legislature, judiciary, and constitutional framework. If the President violates the law, they are free to seek redress in court.”
He added that the PDP governors failed to cite any instance where President Tinubu acted outside legal bounds.
“In what way is the President dictating to them? Is he issuing decrees or interfering in state affairs? They should focus on delivering governance at the state level,” Basiru said.
He further criticized the PDP for what he called “the lamentation of a failed political party,” urging the governors to appreciate the federal resources now available to them rather than making unfounded accusations.
