Tottenham defender Djed Spence says it would be a “blessing” to make history as the first openly Muslim male footballer to represent England at senior level, as he prepares for a potential debut under coach Thomas Tuchel.
The 25-year-old full-back is one of two fresh call-ups in England’s squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia. Should he feature, Spence would become the first Muslim man to play for the Three Lions.
“I’ve seen that and it’s amazing, a real blessing,” Spence said during England’s training camp. “To be the first ever… I was surprised, but it’s incredible. Honestly, I don’t have the words.”
The former England U-21 international stressed he does not feel additional pressure, adding: “I just play football with a smile on my face.”
Spence, who often highlights his faith on social media, described his Islamic belief as central to his life.
“First things first, God is the greatest,” he said. “I pray a lot and give gratitude to God. In my darkest and toughest moments, I’ve always felt God by my side. And when I succeed, I make sure to honour Him as well.”
Spence’s journey to this point has been far from straightforward. After breaking through with Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest, he joined Tottenham in 2022. However, under Antonio Conte, he struggled for playing time and was sent on loan to Rennes, Leeds, and Genoa.
It wasn’t until December 2024 that he finally made his full Spurs debut, two-and-a-half years after signing. That season, he established himself in the squad and featured in Tottenham’s Europa League final victory over Athletic Bilbao, a campaign he described as a turning point.
“Without a strong mentality, you won’t reach the top,” Spence reflected. “I’ve always believed in myself and I remember those who doubted me. It feels good to prove them wrong.”
Looking ahead, he hopes his story inspires others. “If I can do it, you can too,” he said. “Not just Muslim kids, any child, from any faith. If you put your mind to something, you can achieve it.”
England, currently top of Group K with three wins from three, face Andorra at Villa Park on Saturday before travelling to Belgrade for Tuesday’s clash with Serbia.
